Blethen-Knight Ridder
(pages under construction)
They don't control what you think. They control what you think about.
Seattle family owns 51% of Times

Seattle's Blethen family owns 51% of the Seattle Times while the Knight-Ridder chain owns 49%. These folks also own the Yakima Herald Republic, and Walla Walla Union Bulletin.

Seattle Times publisher is Frank Blethen at POB 70, Seattle, WA 98111. Call him out on Mercer Island at (206) 232-1810. The Times is produced at 1121 John St., Seatttle, 91809-5321, and (206) 464-1111. The front desk is guarded like the Pentagon.

The Walla Walla Union Bulletin is published by employee Charles Cochrane, Jr., at (509) 525-3300.

The Yakima Herald Republic at (509) 248-1251 is published by employee James Barnhill at 114 S. 4th St., Yakima, 98901.

Knight Ridder, Inc., is headed up by CEO and Board Chairman Tony Ridder, 50 W. San Fernando St., Suite 1500, San Jose, CA, 95113. Phone him at 408-938-7700. At least to 1995, Tony & Co. banked with the Valley National Bank of Arizona, Phoenix, AZ. Press insiders say that, so far, the Blethen family's extra two percent has enabled them to outvote Knight-Ridder when it comes to "publishing decisions". Part of that decision making is what will and won't be seen in the pages of newspapers they co-own.
